Pirate radio was born of necessity. "Pirates of the south" captures the heart of this scene, the trends, the youth culture, the street drama and of course the music!
UK airwaves will never be the same again...
In the summer of 1998, 16 year old Alana Carey became embroiled in the pirate radio scene as a form of escapism from her unhappy home life.
After losing her beloved father at a tender age, her mother quickly remarried and life would never be the same for her. With a physically abusive step-father, domestic violence was now a way of life for Alana and her mother. Through her love of pirate radio, Alana is befriended by a group of four older teenage boys.
She unwittingly succumbs to the charms and promises of one of the group, Ricky Johnson.
Seemingly never short of money earned from his drug deals.Ricky easily impresses her with his promises of everything that money can buy and takes her under his wing.
Regularly playing truant from school coupled with her parent's poor excuses for the constant bruises to her body, Alana is temporarily
taken into care by social services where she meets a kindred spirit in teenage pirate radio DJ called Curt.
Seizing an opportunity, Ricky uses Curt as a platform to learn more about running a pirate radio station and the art of the DJ. Ricky starts to make a name for himself as a DJ, as does Alana.
Alana; who is easily manipulated, is physically threatened by Ricky into stepping down from her DJ success in order to build up his own following first.
Finding herself in another physically abusive relationship and not wanting to follow in her mother's footsteps, Alana decides to turn the tables on Ricky and play him at his own game. Over a period of time, with the help of the ever loyal Curt, she builds up her own following under a pseudonym 'WISPA' and continues to DJ.
Now in the present day and aged 24, Alana and her mother desperately try to build a new life after breaking free of her step-father, with both falling into a slippery world of vice encouraged by Ricky. Now she has come of age and is fully immersed in gang and drug culture, jealousy takes a hold of the old group. Some break off into factions and start rival stations. Alana quickly learns she is able to easily manipulate Ricky and the other men in her life and she uses it to her full advantage, making a lot of money along the way. Slowly rising up the ranks, running her own illegal radio station and hosting club nights she gradually becomes one of London's most prominent pirate radio DJ's. With a burning passion and money she had managed to save; Alana, with the help of Curt, fight the courts in order to realise her dream of making WISPA FM a fully legitimate radio station and to reveal her true identity.
